Cutural Memory and Transmediality: the Representation of Trauma in Comics, Graphic Novels, Film and Documentaries

This project is offered at Campus Sint-Andries (Antwerp).

This project focuses on the representation of Italy’s recent history in transmedial narratives, such as comics, graphic novels, films and documentaries, which refer overtly one to another. It concentrates on the representation of traumatic events, ranging from Italy’s political violence (the so-called Years of Lead, the turmoil that spread from the 1960s to the 1980s and beyond), over criminal violence and natural disasters, to migration processes. These events unsolved issues from the past. The identity of the perpetrators/instigators has remained unknown, while victims remained invisible until the beginning of the 21st century. To that end, the course will include the analysis of representative transmedial narratives.
